1 8 D ec 2 00 1 Unified Scaling Law for Earthquakes

چکیده

We show that the distribution of waiting times between earthquakes occurring in California obeys a simple unified scaling law valid from tens of seconds to tens of years, see Eq. (1) and Fig. 4. The short time clustering, commonly referred to as aftershocks, is nothing but the short time limit of the general hierarchical properties of earthquakes. There is no unique operational way of distinguishing between main shocks and aftershocks. In the unified law, the Gutenberg-Richter bvalue, the exponent −1 of the Omori law for aftershocks, and the fractal dimension df of earthquakes appear as critical indices.

Local distributions and rate fluctuations in a unified scaling law for earthquakes.

A recently proposed unified scaling law for interoccurrence times of earthquakes is analyzed, both theoretically and with data from Southern California. We decompose the corresponding probability density into local-instantaneous distributions, which scale with the rate of earthquake occurrence. The fluctuations of the rate, characterizing the nonstationarity of the process, show a double power-...

The statistics of recurrence times in broad areas have been reported to obey universal scaling laws, both for single homogeneous regions (Corral, 2003) and when averaged over multiple regions (Bak et al.,2002). These unified scaling laws are characterized by intermediate power law asymp-totics. On the other hand, Molchan (2005) has presented a mathematical proof that, if such a universal law ex...

2 1 D ec 2 00 8 Ising ( Conformal ) Fields and Cluster Area Measures

We provide a representation for the scaling limit of the d = 2 critical Ising magnetization field as a (conformal) random field using SLE (Schramm-Loewner Evolution) clusters and associated renormalized area measures. The renormalized areas are from the scaling limit of the critical FK (Fortuin-Kasteleyn) clusters and the random field is a convergent sum of the area measures with random signs. ...

Universal local versus unified global scaling laws in the statistics of seismicity Álvaro Corral

The unified scaling law for earthquakes, proposed by Bak, Christensen, Danon and Scanlon, is shown to hold worldwide, as well as for areas as diverse as Japan, New Zealand, Spain or New Madrid. The scaling functions that account for the rescaled recurrence-time probability densities show a power-law behavior for long times, with a universal exponent about (minus) 2.2. Another decreasing power l...
